Off Line Cruise Planner

Postby irish86 » Tue Nov 14, 2017 8:30 pm

Recently took delivery on my 2018 28 Express. It has the Garmin 7600 chart plotter. Looking for recommendations on an off line course plotting package that will allow me to plan a cruise then download to my Garmin. Recommendations?

I would first try Garmin's App BlueChart. I have not yet made that connection set up on my plotter, but I know it's intended to do what you're asking. There are some others on here with more experience at it, but I wold start there at least.

I use Garmin’s BlueChart App to plan my trips. I also loaded several waypoints that are nice to have in the boat.

It is easy to use, I only see one issue with my use case. I keep all routes and waypoints in both the App and the boat plotter. When adding a new to the plotter, it transfers all routes creating duplicates.

From the looks of things on the Garmin site, BlueChart is no longer available - they have replaced it with ActiveCaptain. I'll give that a try

I was able to get to the boat to perform the Active Captain setup (not easy given this arctic-style winter we are having on the east coast this year). It involved first loading the app on the iPad, then insuring the chartplotter had the latest software version - this was the only stumbling point as the instructions indicated an SD card was required when in fact the chartplotter needs a micro SD card. After a second trip to Best Buy I was good to go. Next was setting up the chartplotter wifi which then synchronized the charts onto to the iPad. Everything went smoothly and I am now able to create trips and virtually explore possible weekend excursions. Need to wait until the spring to see how well the download and use go. But overall, have to give this setup high marks for ease of use and quality of instructions.

That's great, Irish. I'm seriously considering getting this system too. But I think I'll make the final decision in the spring. Like yourself, I wouldn't be able to fully test it out or take advantage of it until then anyway.

Quick update - have used the Active Captain course plotting feature a few times this summer. It has worked very well and has been quite helpful planning trips down the bay. Very easy to use the app on the iPad for planning and creating a route. Helpful to determine travel time and fuel consumption (and possible refueling stops). Syncing to the plotter was quick and smooth.
