Recharging air conditioning questions

Postby Ryan903w » Wed Jul 04, 2018 11:32 am

The misses thinks that the air conditioning in the 2005 Regal 3260 needs to be recharged. I am hoping that someone has completed this previously and could provide me some insight. It has a Marine Air Systems VCD12K/1. I have cleaned the filters and also the coils. The unit blows cool air but it is definitely not as cold as I have felt in other boats. Any advice would be grratly appreciated. Thanks

Typically on a system of that age, they are sealed with no way to add any refrigerant. Is your system an R22 or R410 system? I again assume based on age it will be R22, which unless you are licensed or know someone is difficult to get. A valve port will have to be added into the system to allow access. On my 2007 3060 it was an R22 16K MarineAir system with the Passport II controls.
Thanks, Chris

The system does have R-22 andl it does have ports. I reached out to a local hvac guy to see if he has any r-22 onhand to charge it. My system has the passport i/o control.

Well its good it has ports. That is half the battle for sure. If he has R22 he should be able to quickly recharge it.
Thanks, Chris

I had heard that you may need a marine AC tech and not just an AC tech because the raw water temperature actually is involved in calculating the proper amount of charge in the system which is very different from a system with a condenser. Just relaying this from some earlier conversations I had on recharging marine AC - good luck and let us know how you make out.

You may also want to have the raw water system cleaned. I hear that sometimes they do an acid bath to clear out marine growth from the inside of the coils, etc.

If it is under 5 pounds of coolant, then its just taking an online multiple choice open book test for $25.00

https://www.epatest.com/608/

and if you have the refill ports already there, Then shouldn't be too difficult to do. As I understand, process is removing coolant, weighting it, then returning it while adding anything you are missing.

You will require
- Freon Tank (Storage)
- Recovery Unit
- Manifold
- Scale of some sort
- and maybe a Vac pump
- Filter

Not an expert by any means - but been researching this for another project - so its fresh in my mind :)
Bayliner 175BR - Upstate NY region. (Usually can find me on Saratoga , Sacandaga or Lake George)

Being a service technician for years... A fouled condenser or low water flow will affect the performance for the system. The pressures and temperatures will tell the story.
