Water heater stuck on???

Postby Kikaboo » Sun May 27, 2018 9:26 pm

I have a mystery on ny 2015 32 Exp.

Drive the boat a few hours early this afternoon and docked around 2:30pm. Outside time all day hit 60 max and in the evening it’s 55. After about 8 hours sitting with the engines off I’m sure they are cold by now. The water heater breaker at the panel has not been on all day. Yet when I turn on the hot water, it comes out pipping hot. How is that possible. Could the water heater somehow be on even though the breaker and breaker light is off at the panel?

I’m connect to city water and it comes in cold.

They use a heat exchanger on the engine to the hot water heater. The system works great, but have to be a bit careful as the temp of the engine coolant will be 160-170 feeding the HWH so that water will get much hotter than a standard home unit, which will keep the water hotter for much longer. This also allows smaller amount of hot water to make it last longer for showers etc. I have had hot water a day or day and a half after driving around pretty easy.
Thanks, Chris

Agree with Chris,
Also, there are some valving kits that will prevent (mix) cold water with the excessively hot water in the tank down to 120/130F so you wont get scalded with the 160/180F hot water directly from the tank.

In SF weather I never had the chance of turning on the water heater in my last two boats; after several hours of being stopped the water heater always has kept the water quite hot...
