Bravoitis

Postby stitchsc » Thu May 24, 2018 1:55 pm

Hi all!
While chasing down an overheat problem it appears my boat has Bravoitus :( (Merc 5.7l with B3 drive)The 1' hole between the outdrive and engine has gunked up and collapsed the hose (Will try and attach pic).

My mechanic has no time frame for hours/estimate to get in there to fix it.

Does anyone have an idea of how many hours to get this done?

...ok, i cant get image to attach :(

That pic is of the worst case scenario.
Hopefully you can remove the 2 bolts of the hose housing and cut/grind/break away the insert.
I`ve used a Dremel type grinder to remove the insert first , then the hose

you hours depend on your experiance and your knowledge. The hardest part is getting access to the components. Sometimes its easier or necessary to pull an engine first. Had to pull an engine once to replace a starter.Factory did nut undercut the main stringer and the starter was literally sitting on the stringer.
If you need something quick, check your messages.

Thanks again Doc!
My mechanic will be doing it, i trust him completely and he said he has done a couple in his time, but could not offer any type of estimate. Was just curious to see if i need to budget <1000 or >1000

Thanks for the pics and PM!!

Gosh, still trying to visualize what that picture is showing? Wonder why that seems to be a typical problem on a Bravo 3? Salt water causing the raw water cooling hose to collapse?

Happens with outboards too. The aluminum builds up corrosion between the housing and the rubber hose or copper tube.
This causes a crushing action closing off the water flow. Also found on some aluminum brackets that use a plastic sleeve like GEN II trim rams. corrosion between the plastic and aluminum forces the plastic to crush.
If you have a boat with GEN II rams that are difficult to remove or difficult to install, remove the plastic insert, get a wire brush used for plumbing , clean. grease. install sleeve, install ram.
