Bellows Failed, need U Joints, Gimbal Bearing, etc

Postby rlynch03 » Sun May 13, 2018 7:18 pm

So the thing that bugs me is I had my mechanic/shop replace all bellows last February 2017. Last fall 2017 we didn't pull the drives (should have as preventative maintenance), The boat stays in the water all season.

Did regular oil changes, drive fluid, impellers, as part of the winterization process.

This spring we put the boat in and started it up, starboard gimbal bearing was making all sorts of racket. So we pulled the boat and drives. Starboard side was full of water and gimbal bearing and U-joints are all black and tarnished from sitting all winter in water.

Back to my complaint, is it reasonable to think the bellows would fail in one season? Is it possible they installed one bellow incorrectly and that is why it is full of water?

I guess i learned my lesson that the drives need to be pulled each Fall to check for water and insure all is clean/dry and greased.

1st stop would be the mechanic/shop that 'replaced' the bellows. Let us know what they say, please.
FWIW, my reliable shop mis-installed shift bellows and had to re-do to fix leak.

That shop is the one doing the repair and identified the issue. I just feel like it is unlikely that the bellow failed after one season.

Did they identify the failure? Cut, split, seal, loose clamp, etc.?

Not yet, waiting for all of the parts to come in. Then they will pull the rest of the drive apart and look at the bellows.

Not sure they will tell me If the part was installed incorrectly. Doesn’t mean I won’t ask though.

If they are VP parts yes they have a 1 year warranty on them, and they shouldn't have leaked that quick. Either they were damaged putting them on or they didn't put them on correctly and didn't get them tight. Those were either defective when they arrived on not installed correctly.
Thanks, Chris

Did you have a bubbler in your slip?
We had a lot of freezing around here and there could be damage from that.
I was always told that if you have outdrives and your home waters ice over then the boat should be on the hard for the winter.

Yes the reverse cycle heat won't do much in water that cold. They are only spec'd down to 40-45ish but will go a bit colder. You have to have electric strip heating as well. The other issue you have is that the outflow stream will start to freeze and then burst and then if you are unlucky will flood the boat. Nothing good comes if the water freezes around the boat. When the power goes out at the dock for an extended time, things can go bad quickly. ;)

I was lucky here in Dallas area, in that the lakes did start to freeze in the shallows but my boat was in pretty deep water that never froze. 8-)
Thanks, Chris

Also glad our lake doesn't freeze! We have a automatic engine room 1500 watt heater and leave one of the two HVAC units set to 50F just to help keep the salon/cabin a little warm and dehumidified. Also, no out drives, so after 8 previous vessels with out drives dont have that bellows leaking and maintenance stuff to worry about. interesting is that our slip utility power bill is about the same as our condo in mid town ATL!
