Fenders Fading Gel Coat

Postby anthonyd617 » Tue May 08, 2018 9:19 am

I have Taylor Made Fenders attached to my dock for protection, but this season I just noticed that the lower portion of my gel coat where the fenders hit is dulled away. Anyone have this issue or found a way to keep it from happening? I saw some fender covers, but I don't know if that is the best option or using something else for protection. Thanks in advance!

I have a black hull and can say that fenders almost always will cause scratches. Some of my boating friends wonder why I tend not to raft with them, and this is one reason.

I hear that soft fender covers can help if they are kept very clean.

For my dock, I have wooden dock posts, I just let my rub rail do it's job and hit the posts, rather than use fenders that will rub against the boat and dull the finish. This seems to work fine, after several years, there is no damage to my boat.

You can clean up the dull areas of your gel coat if it's not too bad. You may need to do some wet sanding, and then progress to mid an fine polishing compound.

Of course, other boaters just think I'm crazy and say "enjoy the boat, who cares about minor dull spots", but then again, others think my boat looks like a new boat (mine is a 2005).

My dock has a wood post at the end of it but it is a floating dock so the dock is below the rub rail unfortunately so it needs extra protection for the lower portion of the boat hence why i have the fenders attached on the dock. So need something that protects that lower portion of the gel coat.

Covers are good, but if not kept clean they will get stuff in them and scratch even more. Buffing and compound should bring the shine back. However a suggestion would be to re-tie the boat so that the boat remains in the center of the dock. It should be placed so that it doesn't rub on anything when its tied up when you leave it. If it rubs normally then during storms the fender might not save it if there is a lot of wave action as well.

I had fenders on our dock down low as well, and used them for just docking or to pull closer for the aged challenged riders. But then when it was tied up to go to bed it was set so there is zero rubbing even during a storm. Spring lines on the mid cleat are your friends. We have floating docks as well but they are covered so we also had vertical supports that the rub rail would normally use unless the boat was a bit sideways in the slip.
Thanks, Chris

Dock whips are the perfect solution for this.

You can get a type of mat that hangs between the hull and the fenders so the abrasive movement of the fenders is not on the boat, but on a static mat, However you need to make sure that it's clean behind. It's called a fender cushion.

Like Davie said, dock whips and be done.
