Vibration on right lock

Postby pyro225 » Fri Apr 20, 2018 4:52 pm

Hi all - mercuoser 1.7 and alpha 1 guessing this is an alpha 1 issue, the more lock I put to the right the more the boat vibrates/shakes it’s like a diesel amplifier, left lock is no problem, with the undercurrent at the moment I am have to hold 2/3 right lock to go straight so it’s v shaky - any ideas?

Sounds like a gimbal bearing or "U" joint. Does this happen with gear in forward/reverse, under load or no load, idle or high RPM, how many hours on the out drive/motor, where are you located, salt water or fresh water? Did you ever grease the gimbal bearing (a zerk grease fitting on the out drive) or pull the lower unit and grease the u joint? If U joint or gimbal bearing this problem should exist in both "full" lock directions.

I will check this next time it may do it on the left lock but nowhere near as bad as the right, are you saying does it do it when revving in neutral? And revving in reverse? I will have to try this. It happened when at all speeds in forward drive- it was greased about 18months a go, I’m in brackish Easter 24-7/365. Cheers

Yes, revving in neutral full "lock" in either right or left. Try carefully revving when the out drive is almost trimmed fully up towards the "trailer" position. If it gets worse most likely U joint and maybe gimbal bearing?
let us know what you find out. PS: Where is "Easter"?

Ciao!

Lol should be water - brackish water - the tide comes in from the sea and fresh water out from all the rivers flows both ways

Just back in this in neutral it doesnt seem to do this it makes a slight pitch change but no vibration.

On Saturday the river was very still and I did not experience the vibration - could cross currents cause it?
