Replacement Bimini ?

Postby Herrema4 » Sun Jan 21, 2018 7:36 pm

We are looking at replacing our enclosure on our 3560. The original bimini is sunbrella with the vinyl coating on the bottom side (seamark). In talking with our local canvas guy he recommends doing the new bimini with Sunbrella with NO vinyl coating. He claims its better in that it can breathe and you dont get the shrinkage. We would then just have to waterproof every now and then. Just wondering if there are any opinions out there on this. The original is still on and we have no leaks but are replacing it all due to the glass needing to be replaced.

FWIW, I've had far more shrinkage on my non-bottom vinyl (aft curtain) Sunbrella than I've had with my bimini.
If you keep the bimini up 24/7, then I'd suggest getting the coated version. If, like me, you put it up on hot summer days only, I see no problem with standard Sunbrella.

Would be great if some one had a aluminumized /mylar top surface Bimini. Our current Sunbrella "black" top gets hot enough at sea during summer that you could fry a egg on either the top or underside, really uncomfortable! Even with all the eisen glass down the radiated energy from the top is almost as bad as just standing directly in the sun (other than you dont get sun burned:)

I have just had the windows replaced if the canvas was still good.

Good point, assume you meant just replace the eisen glass if all the canvas is still good. So it looks like you are without a boat? What do you do with yourself all the boating season where you are located? I have been retired about 10 years and no longer own a boat but all three of my sons have boats, two at our lake in GA and one in TN. so they all keep me busy about 25% of the time with their problems/questions!

I've had the same experience with our local canvas shops. I think it comes down to them stocking the non-coated version. The coated product holds up better in my opinion. I think that bonded coating actually helps it resist shrinking and aging to some extent, at least in my experience.

I think its more about care than the product sometimes.
My last boat's bimini on 24/7 was sunbrella but not coated and lasted for the 10 years we had it and looked like new when we sold it. I hand washed with woolite in the spring and coated with 303 afterwards.
The Regal we have now was 13 years old when we bought it and has the vinyl coating and was/is in TERRIBLE shape. All the vinyl is pealing, cracked, ripped, and shrinks. It was probably not taken care of like I took care of mine but still its in awful shape for only 3 years older.
I didn't see anything wrong with the non coated. It still kept all the water out. If you roll it up in the boot its also a lot easier to manage.
I got a quote to replace the entire bridge that blew me away so I am learning to sew... LOL! So far it aint easy and I see why its so expensive.

I purchased my boat new in 2001 and just had the Bimini replaced this season. It did have the Seamark undercoating and was in great shape. The only problem I had were a few random holes that required patches. I decided to replace the entire top with plain Sunbrella. I hope it lasts as long as the original!

I was told that the newer Seamark, does not hold up as well as the older product.

My local canvas guy tells me that you have to be careful with the vinyl coated top to only use gentler cleaning solutions. If you use something too strong it will cause it to delaminate, peel and crack.

This could be why some people have long life vs others that see problems.

On my 3060 I only used water and a soft brush to clean it. That worked great and didn't have any issues.
Thanks, Chris
