Bow Locker Hatch Cover - 3860

Postby JNelson90 » Wed Nov 01, 2017 4:05 pm

My bow locker hatch covers on my 3860 have core issues. I did fix one of them but in the process I got some epoxy (drained through screw holes and opening) on the non-skid face. I did get most of it off but it still looks dirty and the other one is in need of a new core as well and it was a fair amount of work. I was wondering if Regal sold replacement covers and about what they may cost - any input would be greatly appreciated.
Kindest regards, Jeff

Suggest you contact Regal and see if they do sell hatch covers? Probably not but worth a try anyway? Have to guess at what year your vessel is to provide any better advice.

Thank you for your insight and yes my 3860 is a 2006. I had suspected that I would need to reach out to Regal but was hoping to get some insight before heading down that path. Happy boating and I am already counting down to Spring!

The core was rotten and filled with water/moisture so I went through the entire process of replacing the core. Everything went well - except.....

When I was epoxying in the new core the epoxy worked it's way through the screw holes in the gelcoat and wound up on the face of the gelcoat and into the non-skid with a fair amount of epoxy. I worked for hours to remove what I could but the non-skid made that task daunting. It looks fine from a distance but not up to my standards. My other hatch is not as bad but will need a new core as well (I have not started that one). Depending on upon the cost, I would probably buy a replacement next time. Just chiseling out the old core (where it was still sticking to the gelcoat) took several hours. Here is a picture from when I was working on getting the rotten core out from the hatch cover.

So that is a picture of the top of your fwd. deck where the hatch is located? What is the yellow colored material in the picture? Looks like fiberglass wool insulation? And everything "black" is "core" wood? How could the hatch be leaking for so long that you didnt notice any water getting into your cabin? Most likely the leak was small and the core wood just absorbed it and nothing got into the cabin? Looks like a major repair job. Glad you are handy and taking it on yourself!

Go fast, that is actually the hatch to store fenders and lines. Beneath that is the anchor locker so it drains

I have the 3780 and both of my hatches began absorbing water last year. When I removed the latch I realized that Regal never used silicone. They missed on the hinges too. That will be my winter project as well.

What did you use for core material?

Gary,
I dont have a problem with the anchor locker or any other area on our vessel so I didnt have any core material as no problems that I know of. I think we are lucky as the boat, when new, was first splashed on our fresh water lake and has been under a covered dock since then. Are you on salt water an on a un covered slip?

Go fast,
I'm in salt water and uncovered slip.
I purchased the boat new in 2001 and it's in Bristol condition. I keep up with all maintenance as it becomes necessary.
The soft spots in the hatches were discovered at the end of last year but due to family obligations, I was not able to repair this year.

I just discovered a soft spot on my swim platform a few weeks ago, in the area where the carriage bolt goes through. Well, I unbolted it and there was also not a drop of silicone or epoxy around the hole.
Well, I now have another winters project.

Gary, thanks for the info. I know that being in salt water and a un covered dock is really hard on any vessel! Sorry to hear about all the probems but that is part of owning a boat. Dont like the fact that Regal didnt bed in the hinges/bolts etc. with some type of sealant! Possible the Regal life time hull warranty might apply to you as you are the original owner? But your problem area isnt the hull? Wouldn't hurt to call them and ask.
Good luck!
