TAMD75P port side exhaust routing - 4260

Postby lanier4260 » Wed Oct 18, 2017 7:09 am

Has anyone retrofitted their wet exhaust on the port engine on a TAMD75P engine? I have a 2005 4260 with the 75P's and the wet return goes into the exhaust above the turbo such that the water runs back into the turbo when you shut down the engine. Just looking to see how anyone else has solved this problem. Attached is a photo of the current setup. Thanks!

Are you sure you dont have a double walled stainless steel water cooled turbo discharge elbow that just cools the elbow and then the sea water proceeds upward and discharges "downward" into the muffler/exhaust outlet? I cant believe that VP would have designed something like what you are thinking that raw sea water would just drain back into the turbo turbine discharge outlet! Cant be! Are you having any problems with either the engine or turbocharger? What reason did you post this question?

This was a concern of mine as well. Heres pics of the custom SS exhaust I had built to prevent the saltwater drain into Turbo during shutdown.

It’s important to note, that the exhaust was designed by Regal, not VP. Made to fit in our engine room. Also, this motor is mounted backwards with V Drives. My 2005 4260 VP’s have been through a bunch of turbos. I attributed the problem to this manufacturing defect. I have an added concern that the oil pickups are now in the front of the motor (because of the reverse installation), not good when coming up on plane. I have not confirmed this to be an issue. But I spoke with Volvo Reps at the Ft Lauderdale Boat show and they validated my concern. As a result I maximize trim tabs in an effort to minimize high deck angles during operation. FWIW.

Unbelievable! So the VP dealer/distributor that Regal purchases the engines from did a engineering installation review (commissioning) on what Regal designed for a wet exhaust elbow rising vertically above the turbine exhaust outlet and would allow sea water to drain back into the turbo exhaust outlet? Have to wonder what VP says when there is a warranty claim submitted on a in warranty failed turbocharger? How many hours do you guys have on these engines? If you have had to replace several turbochargers did any fail in the warranty period, and if so, did you contact VP regarding a in warranty repair? What did it cost you for the new/redesigned turbo outlet elbow? $$$

I think it cost me about 2-3k. I can't remember off hand.

My boat has been through a bunch of turbos in its 700hr life. I bought it recently so I'll be interested to see if this mod combined with my driving practices make a difference.

Cant believe your "driving practices" would be in question regarding a turbo outlet allowing sea water to flow back into the turbo "turbine" exhaust outlet??

Lancerpilot, thanks the the info. Very helpful. This boat is new to me and I probably only have 10 hours on it, but the prior owner just replaced both turbos less than 50 hours ago and the port side is already making more noise than it should. Do you recall who did the fabrication of the new exhaust?

From "D" dock every one I have talked to cant believe that Regal installed water cooled exhaust elbows that allowed the sea water to "wash back" into the turbo inlet when shutting down the engines. Something funny here. Why dont you remove the turbo exhaust elbows and see where the sea water exits them? Upstream of the turbo or down stream to the exhaust piping?

I have just hit on this subject, and the first thing that comes to mind: if it is such an obvious bad design from the part of Regal boats, has anyone taken it up with them??
Did they ever come back with a response? Did they ever come with an alternative solution/modifications ? like re-routing the exhaust of the port engine with the elbow looking down? did they ever own up? I would think, if a claim is lodged with the insurance people, having such an obvious bad design, a claim will probably be refuted !!!
Anybody claimed insurance for damage due to salt water ingress: turbo, cylinder head/ valve damages + ancillary expenses to repair and re-route the exhausts? your input would be much appreciated.

To make a wild guess here is that as the vessel is long out of warranty that Regal denied any warranty coverage or responsibility, whether due to latent defects in design or manufacturing ? As the OP is only about 100 feet from our slip (we are on D-21) would like to take a look at it myself or ask what has been done to date.
