Regal 1900 Swim Platform cutout splashing water-odd issue

Postby aviator1 » Mon Sep 25, 2017 7:20 pm

2017 Regal 1900
75 hours and this started to happen this past weekend.

Once the boat plains out, above 3500 RPM's, water starts coming out of the cut out on the starboard side of the swim platform, it basically starts shooting up, out of the cut out. Its enough to spray the sun pad and around that cut out an area around 2-3 square feet with water. The cut out just to be clear is the two square cut outs that you would use to hoist the boat out. ( I can post a picture if that helps)

The faster we go, the higher the water would shout out.

Trimming down all the way, stops it but that's not how I normally drive the boat, I am pretty familiar with where the trim needle usually sits and I am not doing anything different now.

Pulled the boat out today, a bunch of as the marina looked at everything, prop is fine, drive appears fine, under the keel area all look fine, trim actuators and their hoses all appear fine.

I am hoping someone has ran across this and can point me in the right direction.

Do you have trim tabs? If so, one might be stuck "down" and causing the unusual spray? Check the tabs if you have them or what position they are in when fully up or down. Let us know what you find regarding trim tabs, other than that not much advice.
Another thought, was by chance your swim platform boarding ladder hanging down?

I really appreciate your response, your always good at these mystery issues!

No trim tabs my good man and the ladder is on my checklist before starting the boat up...ladder is up.

I spent hours today researching this, it has to be something silly that I am overlooking.

Have you added any weight to the back of the boat? Did you have more passengers than usual? Sounds to me like an uneven load towards the stern.

Same weight on the boat, same load of people (two adults and two kids). I even had people shift weight around the boat to have everyone sit on one side or the other...made no different.
Ran it low on fuel, made no difference. Topped off with fuel, made no difference.
Unless there is some water trapped somewhere in the boat that I cannot get to or I cannot see.

No chance of seaweed or something wrapped around the drive to make a spray?

hauled the boat, inspect the drive and the bottom of the boat. Nothing unusual, the mechanics at my marina also looked and nothing obvious was found.

When on plane (with another driving!), CAREFULLY get on your belly and peer over the back edge of the swim platform. When 'normal' you should see the entire stern. If something is in the way, you should be able to see it.
I suspect a cable or hose unsecured.

On the port side, that's precisely what you see...just water exiting the transom smoothly.
On the starboard side, you cant even see the transom...all I see is one big mixture of water swirling around and coming out of the hole I mentioned.

The only thing that was done previous to this, the boat was hoisted and the bottom was buffed due to over spray from Regal during the build.

Interesting Problem!
Some thoughts=
Have a friend take a video of the starboard side of the transom while following you at a safe distance behind you. Maybe that would narrow down where the spray is coming from?
Do you have the old fashioned speedo pick up that mounts to the transom and dips into the water a few inches under the hull? If so, it might be miss aligned or loose causing the spray?

A little more difficult = My middle son has a Go Pro camera with a water proof housing, he mounted it under the swim platform on my long gone Python 24' cuddy cabin go fast boat. He has a video of the prop under water running at WOT, interesting to see but as we didnt have any problems he was just playing around! Dont know if this procedure would help locate the culprit or not.

Last idea, he also has a drone with a HD video camera, he took videos of our 4160 at WOT at sea while on the boat and controlling the drone, also interesting but nothing unusual, just him trying it out? Maybe you can have a friend with a drone do the same thing vs. a boat following you to take some close up videos of the aft while you are having this spray problem?
Has to be something draging in the water causing this spray?

Good luck, let us know what you finally find out!

Dealer cannot find anything, the only thing we did before the issue cropped up was hoist the boat and polish some overspray on the bottom...could this be the issue?

I can't imagine it would. Something has to be dragging in the water to cause it.

Have you had it back in the water since the issue started to see if it is still happening?

Being you have a 2017 and still under Regal factory warranty? I would contact Regal directly and indicate their dealer can not diagnose or remedy the problem! Has this happened since you purchased the boat new or were you the second owner??

The boat is under warranty and I am its first owner, the dealer is making contact with Regal and will let me know. i am going to let the dealer run with it, they have my back.
The boat has 75.5 hours on it and the issue started at 72.8 hours, so its something that popped up and the only thing done to the boat was polish the bottom.

A stupid thought and probably already looked at, but was any tape used to mask off areas when they were polishing it? Maybe some tape left on the hull?

No idea on the cause, but kudos to you for putting so many hours on your boat in one season. That is nearly double what I put on this year!

Best of luck on finding the cause.

So, Aviator, DId you get the problem resolved? If so, what was causing the spray back?

My dealer took out another 2017 Regal 1900 and it did the same thing, I am not happy about it but at least I am not alone.
I had a machine shop make me rubber plugs with holes in them, I installed them yesterday and took her out, no water spray.
Not the ideal solution because something has changed between my other 1900 (2013) and this 1900 (2017)...but I cannot put my dealer thru a science project if another boat is doing the same thing.
Thanks for the follow up Gofast!

Your welcome!
So what changed from 72 hours to 76 hours? What rubber plugs with holes in them do you mean? Maybe a picture or two?
Anyway, glad you got it resolved on your own! Have to wonder what the new owner of the same boat will say about the same problem especially while under Regal factory warranty :)
