Postby pyro225 » Tue Jul 18, 2017 4:39 pm

Hi all - my front bow cushion are stiched in the middle seem. The vinyl looks like it's coming away from the stitching so I'm getting a split.. is there an easy way to try and fix this?

I have a similar situation with my aft cushion. I am planning on taking it to an upholstery shop that specialize in boat covers and convertible tops. My tear is about 2" in length.

Same problem with our port side bridge deck table bottom cushion seating area, the cushion that you have to step on when going thru the fwd. glass windshield door to access the bow. Best advice is take it to a upholstery shop and have it recovered in new vinyl fabric with the color as close as you can get to the original. Original cushion is probably weathered so the color match can be difficult! Trying to repair split seams on weathered vinyl is not a solution, the area repaired will just split somewhere else on either side and you are back to square one!

I have some of the same issues. Probably the only gripe I have with my 2300 is the vinyl. I have cleaned and conditioned them since day 1 and have the seam split issues in a handful of areas. My 2100 never split at the seams. Anyone have idea on cost to recover? Would sending to Regal be option for matching? I suppose shipping would get expensive.

I had a handful of very small tears (1/8" - 3/8") starting at high stress seems on my 2100. I ended up taking superglue to these areas and it's working great. It holds the two pieces together and has prevented them from growing. I only used a dot of glue so it's unnoticeable. I know it's not solving the problem but it does prevent it from getting any worse and it's cheap!

A few years ago I had a couple of cushions with some seams splitting. Took them to my local upholstery guy,
he had to remove the cover, flip inside out and restitch the seams. Works out cheaper as you're only paying for
the labour. Didn't want to get into replacing cushions, matching material and the cost. Though it will have to be
done in the future.

My thoughts=
If the seams are splitting are most likely due to the vinyl being weathered and getting hard. Long term repair would to be just get a local shop to recover with new marine grade vinyl, hopefully with a color that matches what the rest of the vessel fabric is.

So back on this, the reason they’ve gone faster than other cushions is because they get stepped on quite a lot, I load/unload from the bow due to the moaring setup, I know the PO had the moss ring he reversed into , and had the backs cushions go which I got sorted cheap and now it doesn’t quite go.

Because of this I wanted to keep the original design, I found a respected upholsterer for marine and open top classic cars. I suggested reusing the vinyl he said it would save me about £100 but I’d be back, so he’s doing it (both bow cushions) in the exact same design with the correct marine vinyl for £250 ($400ish) not sure if that’s good bad or average. He also suggested putting a very dense foam on and the just - 10mm later on the top that compresses in order to minimise the future damage.

How does that sound? Is that reasonable?

My bridge deck table bottom cushion as previously posted above is being totally re upholstered this week. Shop is using a super high quality marine vinyl (about $50/yd.) that matches the un faded color of the original fabric about 95% (the portion of the cushion that wedges under the back cushion and not exposed to sun or any water) . Price= material and labor $236. The cushion is fairly complex, curved and has a step up in the thickness at the front (where your legs set) and a sewn seam at that transition point.

Just picked up the re upholstered cushion, looks great! Total cost with all new heavy duty marine vinyl was $226. I am going to have them do the other two seat cushions on the bridge deck and most likely the back cushions once I figure how to remove them.

For those of you that have a circa 2001 regal here is the color of heavy duty marine vinyl used on my cushion = Capitiano Sandshell . It matches the original about 98%. Not sure of the manufacture but could find out if anyone interested. It is a light cream white color, hard to explain a color in words! Same problem trying to explain the taste of "Root Beer" to my German colleagues a few years ago :)
