35SC - How to access battery

Postby Rpontual » Mon Apr 11, 2016 4:08 pm

My 35SC has a couple of batteries in the starboard side near the transom. Today I tried to reach the terminals of the furthest battery and I couldn't, the starboard side engine blocks my reach. I am wondering if there is a tool to verify the water level and refill as needed from distance. Do you guys have any trick?

I also wanted to clean the batteries terminals and apply protection. By now I am considering hiring a Victoria Secret model to see if she can reach the battery terminals.

Hmmm...I'm thinking you should hire the model regardless, sounds like a good idea.

Anytime I spend more than a few minutes in my engine room regardless of what I am tinkering with, I find certainl muscles hurting. There is just no way to be comfortable in there working stuff for any length of time. Probably true for most boats until you get into the really big rigs.

I am getting used to squeeze in the engine room, but I can't get to these batteries.

I am wondering if the D3-220 engine is a bit taller than the gasoline units. Tomorrow I may remove the engine cover, the black plastic, to try once more. I want to clean the battery terminals and I am doing my best to need a model dirty with engine oil.

Oh the battery curse. I will reference you to my post about the wire conduit on the previous post on running cables to the arch. I can tell you from experience that they are a royal pain to get to. The best part is the battery cables are wire tied to the deck right below the terminals too. Mine aren't now! Ask me how I know trying to swap out two group 31 batteries from back there. I had to use a 2x4 across the engine hatch and a ratchet strap to haul the batteries out of there. My arms were so sore. The back ones were easier than the one on the front firewall.... That one being behind the exhaust pipe of the genny means you have to lift it straight up to clear the hose, and when you are laying across the motor it makes it very difficult! They are in the worst position. It makes me want to use AGM's but those are so expensive.. Needless to say my battery checking on those two back starting batteries is lacking for sure. They were much easier to get in my 3060.

If you figure out a way to do it let me know. Just wait until you need to replace the hot water heater and have to pull the SB engine to do it! ;)
Thanks, Chris

I reach those batteries lying on top of the starboard engine ( distributing my weight) or from the rear of the boat without getting into the engine room, just streching with my body on the swim platform and rear storage compartment.

I am still unable to reach these two batteries. I am wondering if any of you have experience with the device in the photo.

The device has an independent valve for each section of the battery, it automatically levels each section by closing the valve. Once the fluid level is restored the device is supposed to be left in place for future maintenance.

I guess I could find a way to attach those units in the batteries, but I am reluctant to purchase it without any information from users...

Dom999; off topic but ....
Does your Avatar shows an SC35 with a Sea Doo Spark on the platform?
Do you have more pictures you could post on a separate thread? (O send me a PM...)

Thanks!'

Hey I want more info on this seadoo spark setup as well. Also what the max weight posted for your 35SC swim platform.
New topic thread on this would be appreciated.

As your boat is also diesel, I will try to reach the batteries again. The two times I tried my body couldn't go through the gap between engine and boat body. I received the battery filling unit, I will take some pictures and post as well.

Thank you for sharing the picture and the information.

I managed to install "Quik-Fill" on the two hard to access batteries. Other then having to access the batteries the installation was pretty simple.

The quik-fill installed in place of the battery caps

After installing it I added distilled water to the batteries, the process is fast and easy.

If you have hard to reach batteries and they require maintenance, this is the way to go.
