My 2013 28 Express

Postby Ella28 » Wed Mar 28, 2018 5:48 pm

Here is Ella, our 2013 28 Express that we purchased back in April 2015 as a brand-new leftover from a dealer Wisconsin and then shipped it home to Connecticut. We are getting ready to launch her for our 4th season aboard.

Here are the easily removable dinghy davits that I mounted to our platform to haul our dinghy around with the motor still on

What davits are those?
Are the brackets only screwed down from the top or do you have backing plates under the platform?
Do you have a motor for you dinghy and what’s the total weight (dinghy and motor)

I have backing plates under the platform all mounted with stainless nylock nuts, bolts and washers. I used the Weaver Quick Kit mounting plates which allow me to easily remove the davits from the platform. When the davits are off the mounts they are low profile and no one has stubbed their toes on them yet! The davits I bought on eBay from a guy that makes really nice copies of another very expensive brand of davits. They were about half the price of the real thing and great quality. A quick release pin holds the davits in the mounts. You can see the mounting plates on the platform below. We have a West Marine 9 foot dingy so it is slightly wider than the boat when on the platform and we have a Tohatsu 6hp 4 stroke on it. I think the boat itself is about 100 lbs and the motor is 65 lbs. I will say that performance drops a bit when we have the dinghy tied down

People must think we are nuts when they see our 28 footer heading out to Long Island Sound and we are loaded up to go to our mooring ball in Port Jeff as we have 2 paddle boards on bow rail racks, the dingy hanging off the swim platform and we are packed with our generator, and full of fuel, water, and ice for the weekend! Ella is a little less fuel efficient and might just take a bit longer to get on plane! LOL!

Ha..nice! I'm slipped in Stamford we usually head over to LI on the weekends anywhere from Mattituck to Port Washington including Port Jeff on occasion.
I'm always on the lookout for other Regals and it seems Ella you would be pretty easy to spot with that setup.

Hopefully we will see you out on the Sound at some point! We love staying at Strongs Water Club in Mattituck - what a great spot! Last year we went with 13 boats from our marina in August and it looks like we have 16 going so far this summer.
But our favorite spot is definitely our mooring ball in PJ. It is a great spot with easy beach access via dinghy.

Excellent. We always make a stop at SWC..usually during their Summer Concert. This will also be our first year with a dinghy so I'm looking for places to hang with a beach close by...especially if its a place where we can take our dog.

I like the idea. I place my grill on my bow ladder similar to this
Image

I have since clamped the grill on the other side rail of the ladder so the grill is more over top of the ladder as one time my cut of steak was a little too thick and started to rotate the grill.

So here is what our dinghy looks like when hooked up to our davit system on our 28 Express...
Dinghy on Davits.jpg

Our dinghy is 9'6" so it is a foot wider than the 28 Express when on the davits. So I tie it off with the transom of the dinghy flush with the starboard side of our boat because we are a starboard tie off at our dock. The bow of the dinghy hangs off the port side a bit but it does not cause any issues.

And I ended up removing our grill mount from the swim ladder locker as it made getting on and off the boat while grilling difficult. I remounted it on the port side edge of the platform and now you can use the swim ladder and walk in and out of the transom door with no issues while grilling. We have been cooking up a storm out at our mooring ball now!

Next project is to add a voltmeter in the electrical panel for the 12v system as EpicWakeJump did in this thread viewtopic.php?f=24&t=17141

Then I am planning on adding a 2nd house battery to give me more juice when on our ball for multiple nights - has anyone else done this in their 28 Express? The space is tight down there. I will post pics when done.

I have also starting replacing all of our cabin lights with LED bulbs.
I bought this 2 pack of 1076/1142 LED bulbs for the light in the head and it works great! https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EK ... UTF8&psc=1
I bought this 10 pack of G4 LED bulbs for all of the cabin lights and will replace them this weekend and post pics https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EK ... UTF8&psc=1

The new LED's should use a little less juice than the stock bulbs and run cooler. I have tried multiple bulbs in the head over the past few seasons and the one I have in there now is the best one by far. Not too white and not too warm. Just good, clean light at low power!
