Volvo 380 Gen 4 vs. Gen 5

Postby Mike2150 » Wed Feb 20, 2019 4:47 pm

I’m familiar with the improvements in the gen V engine but could use some clarity on how to distinguish between the 2 generations just from looking at the engine - I’m assuming ALL gen 5 380 engines have the square heat exchanger vs the old round long canister type, and ALL gen 5 380’s have the blue water release knob, that, when pushed, releases all the water out of the block?

Were there any gen 5 engines that had the round canister exchanger and did not have the blue water release knob, but underneath was the 6.2L block, direct injection, and aluminum block?

Just wondering if there were two versions of the gen 5 released in mid/late 2017.

Thanks for the help!!!

The Gen 4 is a 6.0l and the Gen 5 is a 6.2l. Totally different engines.

The Gen 4 has a cast iron block, MPI, variable valve timing (VVT), fully closed cooled including the exhaust, canister type heat exchanger

Gen 5 is all aluminum construction, direct injection, VVT, closed cooled block with raw water cooled manifolds, square heat exchanger

The Gen 5 380 came out a year later than the other Gen 5 engines and I believe all the Gen 5 380's have the release knob.

Thanks! That’s what I thought. I have a 2013 Gen IV and am looking at a newer ‘17 Regal with an engine being billed as a gen V but it looks exactly like mine with a round exchanger, no blue quick drain water release, and the oil filler cap on the side, not in the top plastic shroud. Dealer said “some gen V’s didn’t come with the water drain system” - that sounded a bit off to me.

FYI the gen IV doesn’t have total closed cooling. Raw water is brought in through the impeller and through the heat exchanger to cool the Volvo coolant. So your exchanger still needs to be winterized - or just drain the system.

Thanks again for verifying what I already thought was true!

I think by saying full closed cooling, that lg260ss was just referencing that the manifolds are closed loop cooled and not raw water cooled. Typically most all manufactures will raw water cool the manifolds even if the engine has a heat exchanger. That is why the manifolds on the 380/430 gen4 will last the life of the motor and don't require changing even in salt water.
Thanks, Chris

That dealer is either lying to you, or more likely, they have no idea what they are talking about. That is a "leftover" Gen 4

I will agree though, the earlier Gen V 5.3l and 4.3l did not come with the easy drain system.

Any idea when the gen V 380/430’s hit the scene? I’m assuming for model year 2018?
