On the bright side at least you had the bow thruster on the IPS boat! Most people figure if they have the joystick, they don't need to worry about such things and save the money. That is until something happens with the IPS system. You should always practice the "old fashion" way of doing things for just such and emergency.

Although I have to admit I haven't tried backing into my slip on a single engine yet. Might be a good thing to try this weekend when everyone is out there! I will have all sorts of dock-wise captains telling me what I am doing wrong. :)

Good to hear you made it back in one piece.
Thanks, Chris

Our firt trip back through the locks at Swift Rapids was interesting
The wind pushed the bow pulpit off the lock wall even though I had both engines in reverse
No damage that I could see but I did not like that sound
Once they closed the door the wind dropped and we were able to catch the line
We stayed at the Waubic Friday night and Port of Orilla Sat night
Scott and Gail were with us and we had a blast
That was our first trip across the Lake and coming back there was lots of chop which made me
Uncomfortable but we managed to get across with no incident
I can hardly wait till our GB trip the first two weeks of Aug

Congrats on the maiden cross-lake voyage Wayne.

You picked an interesting weekend to initiate yourself into cross-lake cruising on Lake Simcoe (you probably experienced first had the Lake Simcoe on-screen warning that appears on the GPS - ("caution - sudden and violent storms"). That wind on Saturday was something else. I think it was sustained in the 30+ mph range with gusts up to 38-40 mph. I took the 3860 out and didn't have too much difficulty with the waves even though some sent spray throught he side windows. I did hear over the VHF about 3 Maydays father up the lake. The Coast Guard had a busy day I take it with small boats in the 14 - 20 ft range getting swamped by the following sea.

The wind had an interesting effect on the boat that I never experienced before. It really keep the front end of the vessel up in the air - hard to get on plane when proceeding into the wind. Also with the IPS at full power sideways (about 800 rpm or so) I could only hold my position against the broadside wind but couldn't advance into it.

Sunday was completely the opposite - not a cloud in the sky and the lake was most as flat as a mirror.

You'll enjoy Georgian Bay - much the same weather. Rough seas one day and then smooth sailing the next. Keep to the small craft route and you be on the inside sheltered route most of the way.
