Props and low water...

Postby pyro225 » Sun Oct 29, 2017 2:31 am

Hi all on my 1900 the river we are on has a few shallow spots 2.5ft worst times of the year. The river base is very soft clay with a little sand. There are also reads in it sometimes.

Ok now the question for the past 3yrs I’ve run stainless props and they will churn through it no problem (only small high spots) there is never rocks etc in it.

Anyway I got a comprop and it snapped a blade I’m guessing due to a combination of the above. I now want a new 4/5 blade and wondering if an alu prop would be able to churn the odd bit of clay or if it will snap the blade and I will need an ss...

Any ideas?

Aluminum will bend the blades but they won’t snap off, but the prop will still be damaged.

Stainless steel won’t be damaged as easily but if you did hit something hard it can damage other parts of the outdrive.

I think it is a bad idea to be running where you know it is that shallow and knowing you are pushing your prop through the ground at the bottom. Either trim the drive up some, paddle through it, or find another idea to boat. Sooner or later you will cause significant damage to your boat.

My wife doesn't like it when we are in less than double digit numbers.

I give you alot of credit, if I pick up a single nick on my prop...I wonder what I did wrong and I often spend my time boating just making sure there is enough water under me so my outdrive doesnt hit anything.
I am thinking with your boating, you should explore a jet type drive system.
Stainless will be very unforgiving and damage will come, only a matter of time.
