LS engine for SLR2100

Postby burls » Sat Oct 27, 2018 9:37 pm

My 5.0 mercruiser is a bit sluggish and no good for pulling heavy skiers so l was wondering about re-engineing with either a 350 or 496, l have access to a 496 but it would be another 80-90 kilos heavier

Your thoughts please

I would think a 496 might be physically too big to fit in a 2100 without major maodifications. I would stick with a 350, maybe get an EFI 350 they make 300hp and have a lot more torque than the 5.0.

After some research, Le have decided to go with an upgrade from 5.0 to 5.7 mercruiser. Just wondering what other mods are required and what hang on parts will still be usable

What year is your boat? Is the current engine the original? Carb or FI?

I would not expect there to be m much of a difference between a 5.0 and a 5.7 if both are from the same year and have the same fueling method (card/FI). They are basically the same engine except for stroke.

Later model year GM engines will have Vortec heads, which produced a lot more power due to better breathing.

You might explore rebuilding your current motor to be a ~400 CI with Vortec heads. This would be simple for a carb'd motor, might be more complicated with FI as the fueling equation will be changed significantly.

Just throwing out ideas, I am not an expert, so take these idea with a grain of salt.

Best of luck and keep us informed of your progress.

Pretty sure the boat n motor are89 vintage and has vortex 5.0 with twin barrel injected.

I have decided to stay Merc and either a 5.7 or 6.2 and hope everything bolts up. if it doesn't I'll just have to do some overtime.

I think the current block is past its used by date so would prefer to get a fresher one rather than waste anymore money on this one.

Thanks for the comments though, keep em coming

Are you swapping out the stern drive as well?

Good point about the 6.0 LS. Assume there is a limit to a Merc Alpha 1 outdrive regarding torque. If so, might want to consider staying with a 5.7 L (Merc or VP) or change out to a Bravo I out drive to be safe? Really depends on how you drive the boat (hard or on plane then back to a cruising speed)?
