3260 Engine Detailing

Postby Regal3260 » Sun Mar 25, 2018 7:32 pm

So, one of the things that has been on my list of tasks that I want to tackle is detailing the 5.7L GXI Volvo Pentas.
While I keep my engines and engine bay quite clean I think it's time for some detail cleaning.
My question is what is the best way to safely clean the flame arrestors. I would assume removing them to clean would be the easiest.
Any other tips would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Mark

I removed mine and cleaned them with carburetor cleaning spray. Do this away from the boat as it is very flammable!

After removing it from the carb.
I use compressed air (from the inside of the flame arrestor) .
Also, this works well "scrubbing bubbles" foam , then rinse.

Just more options.

Just an option, replaced mine with K&N and have been very impressed with them, same boat same engines. About 300rpm improvement which means plane out at 2800 not 3100 and better fuel mileage too. It was expensive though.

As marine engines don't really need air "filters", just "flame arrestors" I would just remove them (on our VP's they are just finely spaced SS mesh screening to distinguish any back fire flames that may come out of the intakes and into the engine room, hardly ever happens on EFI engines! I would just remove them, take home and clean them with simple green or something equivalent, dried them out, blow back into the discharge side with a air hose, and replaced. The problem with "air filter" type filters is that most likely they are not USCG approved "flame arrestors" and they add additional restriction to the intake air flow! Just clean your current "flame arrestors" and put them back on, there isn't much if any dirty air in the engine room while on the water!

kpic24 - Thanks for the info on the replacements. The K&N really look good, just not going to spend that money on them right now.

So, I used the Carb spray yesterday as ImRich mentioned and they turned out really nice. My concern is that today they still smell
like rocket fuel. Since carb spray is flammable/explosive, should I still wash/rinse them before I install them back on the engines.

I left them in the back of my truck yesterday and I've got a good buzz going from driving around today with them in the back.
