Looking to buy a used 2014 28 Express

Postby Boater71 » Thu Mar 15, 2018 8:34 pm

Hi All, new to the forum, have been looking to buy mid range cruiser (27' to 29') and having been looking hard at the Sea Ray 280 and 290. However, the local Regal dealer offered me a used 28 express 2014. My kids loved the brand boat boat at the show as much as i did. I would like to get opinions as to what to look for for bugs that were fixed or not. Any feedback is much appreciated.

Do a search for the 28 express, lots of owners here and discussions about them. I havne't had one so can't comment on specific model.
Thanks, Chris

I did an extensive search and read many forum contributions. I want to thank in advance all those whom contribute to the conversation. I have a few questions:- -
- Basically, it seems the VP 300 is under powered, most of the used ones for sale are 300, starting to wonder why.
- How about the Mercruiser offered with this boat, is its also under powered?
- Does the YP 2015 and older engines have digital throttle?
- Storage space, from being on the boat and looking at a lot of pictures, there seems to be lack of storage space. I'm looking to spend few nights a week on the boat on the dock and maybe the first season a few camping trip with the kids around beaches. How much stuff can you load on the boat? Especially if we end with the 300? Family of 4 and kids are 8 and 10.
- How much does regal depreciate over time, on the Sea Ray forums the formula was around 5 years were the boat has lost about 40 to 50% in value? then almost flattens out
- When i started my used boat search i was adamant on 2007-09 models with Twins, but found that i can get a 28 Express newer with better value, however only single engine and the 32 express out of my price range. Any thoughts?

In the used market, I'm finding the 28 Express much more appealing than the Sea Ray 280 (2010+ models) and you get more for your money. anyone done been through this before?

Thanks again for all your feedback!!!

Hi - I bought a 2014 28 Express new, and still love it. Here are my responses to your questions:

Q: Basically, it seems the VP 300 is under powered, most of the used ones for sale are 300, starting to wonder why.
A: I don't find it under powered at all. People saying it is under powered are generally those who got the bigger engine. Stand by - I'm sure they will chime in here. Nothing wrong with the bigger engine, but *absolutely* nothing wrong with the 300. Especially when using the tabs, it pops right up on the plane without significant bow-rise. Read the boat test to see for yourself. http://www.boattest.com/review/regal/2693_28-express

Q: How about the Mercruiser offered with this boat, is its also under powered?
A: Can't answer - I have the VP and it is not under powered.

Q: Does the YP 2015 and older engines have digital throttle?
A: Not sure what you mean, but for what it's worth, my VP 300 it is non-EVC, but I very easily added the NMEA 2000 adapter and can get digital engine gauges on the chartplotter etc, as well as the fusion stereo with full zone controls. Here is the thread with details:
viewtopic.php?f=24&t=11351&p=65368&hilit=nmea#p65368

Q:Storage space, from being on the boat and looking at a lot of pictures, there seems to be lack of storage space. I'm looking to spend few nights a week on the boat on the dock and maybe the first season a few camping trip with the kids around beaches. How much stuff can you load on the boat? Especially if we end with the 300? Family of 4 and kids are 8 and 10.
A: Honestly, the storage is good, but like anything else it depends on how much of a pack-rat you are. A few nights a week with 4 people might be tight.

Q: How much does regal depreciate over time, on the Sea Ray forums the formula was around 5 years were the boat has lost about 40 to 50% in value? then almost flattens out
A: Dunno. :)

Q: When i started my used boat search i was adamant on 2007-09 models with Twins, but found that i can get a 28 Express newer with better value, however only single engine and the 32 express out of my price range. Any thoughts?
A: Depends on how you want to use it. We don't go too far offshore, and stick to the ICW when cruising. If I were crossing the gulf-stream without another vessel with me then I'd want another engine...

Hope this helps!

As far as depreciation, I was going to buy a new 28 express ($140k) and I found a 4 year old loaded 28 express with 78 hours for 1/2. There was no way I wanted to take that hit.

Good luck and have fun!

Big engine guy here, haha!

If you plan on heavy loads, multiple guests often, and aggressive water sports (we wakeboard with ours), the bigger engine is great. Most 28 express boats are going to have the 300 because the upgrade has a hefty price tag. Most dealers only stock the 300. Maybe the 300 would be fine for where you plan to boat and how you plan to use it. I find the extra power very useful on Lake George where I’m docked. If you buy new or a 2017 with the gen 5 engine, the 300 is all new Is and not “underpowered” at all.
I don’t recommend the larger engine only because I own one. I have been on a 28 with the pre 2017 300 and wasn’t impressed. If you need tabs for planing or you have to run the engine at 80% WOT or higher to cruise at a decent speed, that doesn’t work for me. There are a few new 28’s at my marina with the Gen 5 300 engine and it’s a much more impressive performer.

Thanks for the feedback on the gen5 and engine recommendation. I like the gen5 because of the FWC amongst many other features. However, its hard to find a used 2016!!!

Does anyone have Mercruiser Magnum 350 with B3 in the 28 express that can share feedback? or anyone that tested it?

Performance wise it should be very similar to the older generation Volvo 300hp. Reliability and cost wise I think everyone you talk to will have a different opinion on which

As the parent company (Brunswick) of Mercuiser and Sea Ray are the same, doubt you will find any Regals powered by Mercruiser? We have yet to find one on our lake:( With our vessels 2X VP 8.1L, 420 HP inboards we cant complain too much about power, but time to pull out, have the bottom pressure washed, and most likely new bottom paint! Boat has been in the water for 17 years continuously since new.

the one offered for sale 2014 But i have not looked at it yet because it's in winter storage is powered by a MerCruiser 350 Magnum – 300HP. I dont mind either VP or Merc, just want to understand if there is a performance difference or if anyone has that experience. the boat is offered at 78k. Thoughts?

There are virtually no performance differences, both are 5.7 GM engines rated at 300hp. Both have mpi, both have duoprop drives.

If there is one option I wish I got, it’s the bow thruster. This is a big, tall boat to handle with a single engine and things can get squirrelly if it’s windy.

The ones I'm looking at have the bow thruster. i thought the same thing, if i'm not getting a second engine, i'm getting a Bow Thruster.

One thing to consider if you plan to boat in Salt or Brackish water.. Some of the engines if I recall have open cooling systems so you would be cooling with salt-water :/

That is the reason I was considering the VP 380 which I believe is fully closed.. Think the VP 300 is partially closed

Maybe other with more experience can chime in here with more specifics

Yes, you are correct. The vp380 6.0 is fully closed cooling. The gen 5, 5.3 300/350 and 6.2 380/430 have a closed block but the manifolds are raw water cooled. The old 5.7 300/320 are raw water cooled standard

i went and looked at the boat in storage and it was a real mess. Rust from almost every fastener, eisinglass had hole, and drive was looked awful. Its a salt water boat, it really put me off on the 28 express, any experiencing rust after few years?

I don’t think those issues are anything to do with the 28 Express. Sounds like owner neglect to me.

Definitely sounds like owner neglect to me. My 2013 looks beautiful still but that is because I take care of her. There are other 28 Express out there for sale to look at.
If I could find a great deal on a 32 Express I would sell you my 2013... ;-)

Thanks for the feedback. I definitely have to agree that it was owner complete neglect and hence moved on especially that it was used in salt water. If the boat looks like this from the interior, I would wonder how the engine would look. I would also look at the 32 express, but the 28 would be fine for now. I'm still looking.

And you definitely want the bow thruster... On a windy day the 28 Express without a thruster would be a challenge to dock.
