225 HP volvo V8 for 2013 2100

Postby richH » Sun Dec 31, 2017 11:00 am

I am considering buying a 2013 2100 which comes with the 5.7 liter 225 volvo v8. I currently own a 204 Chaparral with 5.0 liter 260 hp V8 Mercruiser. How much performance loss would I see. (Both boats weigh approx 3400 pounds.)

I also actually haven't found much info on this engine. Would it be MPI? I think I saw an article that it has catalytic converter and that means more maintenance (replacing the impeller more often, etc.) Any information that would help on this would be great. Thanks.

Loss? If the 2014 2100 performs anything like my former 2007 2200 with 5.7, I think you will see a gain.

Catalytic converters became mandatory in 2011, so the 2013 will have cats and EFI/MPI.

I would not focus on the HP rating so much as the displacement. Recreational boats need the most power when getting on plane (hole shot), and displacement is what gives low RPM torque (most HP mods improve power in mid to upper HP range). Since you are increasing from 5.0 to 5.7 liters, and picking up the FastTrac hull, I would expect that you will see an improvement in performance. However, the is just my "gut'. To get empirical evidence, visit BoatTest.Com and look up their tests for these boats, or similar boats with the same engines.

Good luck!

Here is a link to the Boat test review of the Volvo Penta v8 225 engine
http://www.boattest.com/oem/3211316/engines/6000024/0/

There is no additional maintenance required for catalytic converters and the impeller replacement interval is the same as non catalytic engines.

i bought the same boat same year same motor, last year and have one season in it now. the low and mid acceleration is incredible compared to my previous boat, a 1988 regal sebring with a very well maintained 4.3.

my marina maintains the engine, and they did not mention any special maintenance items, and i did specifically asked many many questions about this motor before buying the boat.

one thing i added early into the season, was tabs. this boat "slapped" a lot on plane on oneida lake, a lake that is wide and shallow, typical conditions are 2' - 3' chop if any wind at all. the tabs helped immensely with this. not much room for mounting, i ended up with the bennett bolts 12" x12" ED (the ED is important part of the part number, low profile mounting, no other bennetts will fit.)

good luck hope you like your new ride :D
