Bottom blisters

Postby mndkhast@aol.com » Sat Dec 09, 2017 4:42 pm

I recently purchased a 2004 3880.
There is extensive bottom blisters and wondering if other owners have experienced a similar problem

We have a 2001 4160 and on haul out for full survey our hull was perfect, including the "moisture" content of the hull/gell coat. I am thinking that it really depends on where the vessel was docked and the condition of the water(either fresh or salt). My oldest son has a Sea Ray on Piercy Priest lake outside of Nashville and he has discovered that he has to have his hull pressure washed at least once or twice a year! That lake is full of stuff that grows on the hull if left in the water year long! Lake Lanier is apparently not subject to all the bottom growth as is possible on other waters.

I had a blistered boat back in 2002 or so. It was not a Regal. It was very depressing to pull my 1 year old boat out of the water and see all those little bumps. The only way to get rid of the blisters is to grind the gelcoat off below the water line, then apply a barrier coat and bottom paint. Blisters are mostly a cosmetic issue but left untreated can cause other hull issues. The cause of blisters is a controversial topic, because nobody really has an exact reason for them occurring. Most believe it starts from a poorly made boat from the factory. It has happened to many if not all boat manufacturers at one time or another and most manufacturers have blister warranties of some kind. Lifetime hull warranties do NOT cover blistering.

Just curious, what does a lifetime hull warranty cover if not blistering? What else can a hull warranty cover, separation of gel coat/laminations/ glass fabric de laminating that you probably will never be able to see or detect! Or bulkhead or hull stringers rot, delamination, etc.

Remember the "Lifetime" hull warranty is only for the 1st owner, and donsen't transfer to other owners. It only covers structural defects, not cosmetic like blisters.
Thanks, Chris

Thanks Chris, that is what I both thought and expected. I believe we are lucky with our 2001 4160 as the pull out for survey 4 years ago didn't show any blisters. Got to believe blistering has a lot to do with the water you are docked in year round, can imagine the smaller boats that can be on lifts/dry docked wont have as much of a problem with the blistering or hull growth problem?

I have no idea why on boats that are going to be in the water all the time that the manufactures offer a bottom paint option why they don't put down multi-layer epoxy barrier coat by default. That would stop so much of the blistering.
Thanks, Chris

I put down an epoxy barrier and than antifouling paint the first year I owned the boat, 2001. I redo the fouling paint every 5 years, still looks new.

Thats great that you are pro active in maintaining your vessel! Are you wet docked year round or on a lift and are you in fresh or salt water? What year and model of Regal do you have, you indicate "since you owned it" was it new or previously owned ? It is always nice to know more than just you have done something to you vessel every 5 years since 2001:)
