New Volvo Penta Gen 5 Engines NMEA or J1939?

Postby aviator1 » Fri Sep 02, 2016 8:13 am

Does anyone know what communication protocol is the new Gen 5 engines?
My 2017 1900 will come with Gen 5 Volvo Penta V6 and looking at doing some homework on hooking it up to my chartplotter like my other 1900 was hooked up.
Many thanks

It depends if you get the (E) version of the engine. If so then it would be EVC based and just need the EVC-N2K network adapter. If its the non-E then you will need J1939 adapter. I am 95% or so sure of that. VP would be a good resource to hit up. The dealer would be if they have a certified IPS tech with the EVC certifications they may or may not know either. A quick look on the tach would tell analog or digital. If digital VP and they bring the 6 pin waterproof connector up to it, then it would have the EVC. The other gauges would be connected via a 3 pin cable in a daisy chained fashion.
Thanks, Chris

We're hoping to have our 2017 2100 next week (Gen 5 280 hp). Want me to take any photos or check anything in particular?

Did you order the V6-280-CE based engine or the V6-280-C only based engine? If its just the "C" then there should be at least two or three connectors on the top of the engine just hanging there. One should be the OBD-M connector, and then the Vodia connector and possibily the EGC connector. That might point us in the correct way to tell.

If its the "CE" then there should be a 6 pin waterproof connector on the back of the Tach. The C(E) adds the EVC and will give you the digital throttle and shifting.
Thanks, Chris

Chris, the spec sheet from Regal only listed "Volvo V6 280 Catalyst - 280 HP; FWC SX Drive; Aluminum Prop; Gen 5". No real way to differentiate EVC or non-EVC, as that was not listed in the description for any of the powerplants.

We may have it as early as Monday, or as late as Thursday, so I will check when we get it.

From my research, all engines will be j1939 except engines that go to California and those will be evc.
The thing you can help me with, when you get your boat...look for three capped connectors or some sort of capped connector...one is free and square, one flat and is black and the third is like a semi circle.
I cannot wait to get this engine, I think we will see a fuel savings and these dfi will have great torque.

The engine can be ordered either way either the C or CE version, but my assumption is that to keep costs lower on smaller boats they only order the "C" version which doesn't have the EVC. In a single engine boat the only thing that the EVC gets you is digital throttle and shifting instead of mechanical linkage.

Aviator are you sure that they would mandate EVC to Cali? Seems strange that they would require digital throttle and shifting as they are both CARB 4 star complaint as long as they are catalyst (catalytic converters) based engines which is the "C" designation in the part number. You can only order the NON-C versions for outside the USA. All new USA based engines require catalytic converters now to be sold in the 50 states, as federally they adopted the CARB requirements.

As you can see by the 2017 engines from VP. I left off the forward drive engines, however they can be only purchased in C and CE models:

Gosh, that's crazy to have so many V-6 and V-8 engines with such a wide range of outputs? I can imagine the service/parts nightmare trying to maintain and the production costs for this many versions of the same displacement! Glad our 2001 8.1 L fuel injected engines with mechanical shift/throttle, basic electrical gauges (even though the Faira tap is a pain in the arsch) and with OBDI connections at the engines are easy for us to diagnose/repair them!

They are actually supposed to have significant parts commonality, so should not be too bad. Looks like the performance will outweigh any of the other gripes.

Chris, seeing as "CE" was never offered or listed, I am guessing it's just a C model on ours (all engine options simply said "Catalyst").

Aviator, I'll get some shots of the plugs.

I confirmed it will be just the C model, Chris is correct...all engines will by catalyst.
I found some data sheets on the engine fuel consumption, we should see about a 10 percent fuel savings...that's pretty considerable.

I did confirm with Volvo that all Gen 5 engines are J1939 data unless you have digital throttle...they said not too many engines are going out with digital throttle at the moment.

Ours (V6-280-C) is in the driveway tonight, I will get some pics of the connectors on top of the engine tomorrow. Quick glance under the cover and I saw three.

The main connector of interest is a deutsh grey in color square connector, if you can get the colors of the wires, I will run with it from there and figure out a hook up. I really appreciate it, gives me a project until my boat comes.

That's perfect, same connector, same wire color as the 1900. It should be plug and play with the maretron gateway I have.

Hey guys, I have the same connections on my v8 300. And a raymarine es series nmea 2000 compatible ,
I'm not tech savvy at all, and I've been reading all these posts related to hooking up to motor.
Could you please tell me the part numbers and links for the wires I need? Please.
I'm good at other things though lol.
