FYI - New users

Recently the forum has been getting attacked by Chinese SPAMMER groups. I catch most of them when they sign up but some slip through and their posts show up for a few hours. Some of the posts have not been what I would call acceptable for family oriented websites.

In order to help curb this issue I have instituted a new policy, effective immediately, in that the first few posts from any user with less than X posts will go into the moderator queue for approval before they appear online. The "X" is a very low number but I don't want to publicize it and help the SPAMMERS. This change can also effect long time members that post for the first time. Posting will generate the following message; "This message has been submitted successfully, but it will need to be approved by a moderator before it is publicly viewable. You will be notified when your post has been approved."

I apologize in advance for delaying people's posts but I don't want this place to get out of control with SPAM. I welcome ALL feedback on this change. If you feel this is wrong then please say so. I'm also open to any ideas others may have.

Thanks for your understanding.

Captain Rommer

I have not seen the spammers but whatever you need to do to keep this site user friendly for all , is OK by me.

Thanks for the effort and time you put into this.

I think it’s a good idea. Sometimes it's not just spam but porn. Some members may log into this forum while at work and having something like porn on their screen could involve disciplinary action taken against them or this web address eventually being blocked by filters. Who maintains this cheesey forum? Does he need help in approving the newbie postings?

At least the kid in the hoodie has not taken over this site also. Keep up the great work. Whatever it takes to keep the junk away (nothing personal fellow members) is ok by me.

Yes, we've seen the spam attacks recently... if you happen to see anything strange, please be sure to let Rommer know about it via a PM.. this will help bring it to resolution sooner in case he hasn't seen it yet... it's our place, and we've all got to help Rommer keep the intruders out!!!

Thanks, its caught quite a bit of SPAM crap and as long as people don't mind suffering a slight delay of their first few posts I'd like to keep it.

I'll probably give a few of the long timers moderator status as well so others can approve posts since I only visit here about 100 times a day! ;)

I had a post go into the review queue yesterday. How long does it take to be posted?

Normally within a few hours at most.

Posts that simply drive people to another discussion forum to discuss an issue being talked about here will not be approved however.

Thanks Kirsh.

The last few days have seen a large influx but the system is working very well so far. I did have a few new people get annoyed at me for delaying their posts but on the weekends, during boating season, I may not check the queue as often as I should.
